These projects have been selected by our independent Grant Review Panel as those that will have the greatest impact in serving uninsured or underinsured women in our service area. Please note that Susan G. Komen for the Cure® is not a direct service provider.
Active Re-Entry – PERKIE Travels: Provides daily transportation from Carbon and Emery Counties for cancer patients, including those with breast cancer, to receive their radiation treatments and medical services in Utah County.
Alliance Community Services : Hispanic/Latina Breast Cancer Education Program in Salt Lake, Weber and Davis Counties (Two Grants—one for SL County and one for Weber & Davis Counties)- Provides extensive breast cancer education programs for the Hispanic/Latina community including information on risk factors and encourage the use of early detection programs. They also provide transportation, translation services and support for the Hispanic population along the Wasatch Front.
Alliance Community Services: Hispanic/Latino Breast Cancer Support Group for Survivors and Their Families: Alliance Community Services (ACS) provides the only Spanish Language Breast Cancer Support Group in the Wasatch front for Hispanic women and their families. This program offers its participants a culturally sensitive, safe place to share and assist one another with mutual support, understanding, caring, encouragement and education on materials and medical information.
Alliance Community Services: Entre Amigas (Among Friends) – Offers assistance by a Professional Health Educator to provide home visits to breast cancer survivors who cannot attend the support group due to a variety of factors.
Cancer Wellness House: Prescription for Survivorship: The goals of this program are to reduce the recurrence rates of those in remission from breast cancer and increase the length and quality of life of those living with recurrent and/or metastatic breast cancer disease encouraging breast cancer survivors to apply physical and/or mental exercises that have been documented to be successful. There will be a facilitation of verbal expression and opportunity for insight and interpersonal exploration with an emphasis on the breast cancer experience. Activities will include yoga, meditation, support groups, hypnosis, massage, therapeutic touch and reiki.
Community Nursing Services (CNS): Home Health and Hospice Services to Uninsured/Underinsured Women with Breast Cancer: Provides a comprehensive, team-centered approach including supportive visits by their staff oncologist, or medical director in outlying offices, and a social worker as prescribed by the patient’s physician. Other services include volunteer services, Lifeline and HomMed Equipment.
Comunidades Unidas: Multicultural Breast Cancer Education Program: This program will serve the non-Hispanic immigrant and refugee community living in Salt Lake County and surrounding areas between the ages of 18 to 70. This is a breast cancer education and case management program utilizing CUs Statewide Multicultural Health Network and a unique peer based grassroots approach. It will also the cultural awareness of agencies, individuals and providers serving the immigrant and refugee community.
Comundidades Unidas: Latina Breast Cancer Education Program: This program will target the Latina women living in Salt Lake and Weber Counties providing them breast cancer education and case management services utilizing their Pomotoras (lay health outreach workers). The Promotoras will be accompanied by experienced CU outreach workers to help those in their respective communities with accessing breast cancer screenings and navigating the healthcare system.
Digital Patient Education: Breast Cancer Screening Awareness Program - Our goal is to increase awareness and education of breast cancer screening in the primary care setting by creating video tutorials to be shown in medical clinic waiting areas. This is a unique opportunity to educate patients right before they speak to their physician and reminder to ask about appropriate screenings.
High Risk Breast Cancer Clinic,Huntsman Cancer Instituteat the University of Utah: Mammogram Screening for Young, Genetically At-Risk Women: Provides mammography for women between the ages of 25 and 39 whose families have a strong history of breast cancer or who have known susceptibility mutations. Many of these women do not have personal financial resources and/or may not want to request payment through their insurance company due to fear of insurance discrimination. This grant provides the financial resources to offer these women the breast health care they need to detect early breast cancer.
Image Reborn Foundation: Healing Retreats for Young Breast Cancer Survivors, Hispanic Breast Cancer Survivors and Renewal Retreats for Those With Metastatic Breast Cancer: Provides healing retreats for women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer to encourage them in a safe setting to reclaim their sense of personal power and strengthen them by providing coping strategies for an improved quality of life to include one additional retreat dedicated to Hispanic women only. The monthly retreats offer educational workshops, informational resources, life skills and coping strategies for living well beyond breast cancer. Metastatic breast cancer survivors will receive information on survivorship issues and on-going support from other survivors facing similar challenges.
Intermountain Healthcare: Community Mammography Screening for the Underserved: Free breast cancer screening events will be held in the four community clinics run by IHC. These clinics are located in the North Temple Clinic, Rose Park Elementary Clinic, Lincoln Elementary Clinic and the Neighborhood Clinic located in the Sorenson Multi-Cultural Center. These screenings will consist of a clinical breast exam by a professional and a voucher for either a screening or diagnostic mammogram based on the findings for women ages 40-64. If a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer, UCCP or IHC will make funding available for treatment through the traditional eligibility processes that are in place.
KUED: Breast Cancer Awareness - KUED will produce a 30-minute program detailing the stories of four women with breast cancer, followed by a 30-minute call-in program designed to connect viewers with the latest information on breast cancer research, screening and treatments. Viewers will be able to call our phone bank to receive resources and information.
KUED: Breast Cancer Awareness Community Outreach - KUED will conduct a number of community outreach activities. In an effort to reach our Hispanic/Latina population, we will produce and air breast cancer awareness educational spots on our Spanish language channel V-me, as well as host an awareness and resource event on the west side of Salt Lake City. KUED will also produce and air two three-minute public service announcements on community resources associated with breast cancer awareness.
Needs Beyond Medicine: Young Breast Cancer Survivors; Needs Beyond Medicine: Raises the awareness of the community about the need for palliative care, educating survivors and providers about palliative care and expanding the Needs Beyond Medicine program to provide financial assistance to more women, men and their children focusing on women under thirty.
University of Utah, Patient Education at Huntsman Cancer Institute: “What Do I Do Now?” Answers for Women at Higher Risk for Breast and Ovarian Cancer – Provide a high risk breast cancer conference for individuals who are “previvors” – new to their BRCA status, those in treatment and those who plan to take preventative action and those who want to stay informed. Decisions about risk management can influence long-term quality of life.
Utah Cancer Control Program: Breast Cancer Screening Program for Younger Women: Provides women living in Salt Lake, Utah, Weber and Davis counties who would otherwise qualify for the federally-funded breast cancer screening program by income but who are younger than age 40 and have an abnormality suspicious for cancer on clinical breast exam and no health insurance to receive appropriate and timely diagnostic evaluation.
Utah Cancer Foundation: Living Well with Breast Cancer and Breast Cancer Patient Caregiver Support – Six-part Educational and Support series designed to provide women and their caregivers (in some separate but simultaneous groups) with education, information and support. The goal is to empower women and caregivers with information and education, as well as support them in their efforts to LIVE WELL through their cancer and beyond
Utah Partners for Health: Breast Health Education and Screening Services for the Uninsured and Underserved: Provides free to low cost breast cancer screening to uninsured and low-income women in Salt Lake County through three medical clinics and an outreach to refugee, immigrant and disenfranchised populations via a mobile medical unit. Women who receive in clinic physical exams will be shown a 5 minute breast health educational video. The newest part of this program is a collaboration that provides access to low-cost diagnostic mammograms.
Utah Pride Center: Alternative Women’s Wellness Program: Culturally appropriate breast cancer resource materials will be purchased and will be made available at their office as well as at events. The Breast Dialogues event will provide a venue for heightening awareness in LBT women.
