Insurance coverage & oral anti-cancer therapies.
While IV-administered drug therapy is a well-known component of cancer treatment, an increasing number of cancer drugs today are orally-administered. In fact, oral drugs have become the standard of care for many types of cancer. But insurance policies have not kept pace with advances in cancer drug therapy. As a result, patients often find themselves facing high out-of-pocket costs when filling their prescriptions for orally-administered cancer drugs, sometimes in the thousands of dollars per month. Such high cost-sharing is a barrier to care, as it prevents patients from accessing the treatments prescribed by their physicians. This is a deeply serious concern for all cancer patients, especially those for whom an oral drug is the only available treatment. That's why Komen supports efforts to prohibit insurers from discriminating against orally-administered drugs when determining coverage for cancer treatment.
